Miranda Heath

Hello, I'm Miranda! I research collective moral behaviour in theory and in practice.

I am studying for a PhD in psychology and philosophy at the University of Edinburgh. I research moral psychology's individualism and neglect of collective moral behaviour. I hope my critique will help us move towards a moral psychology that is better able to guide our response to collective action problems, like the climate crisis and commons management. I am supervised by Dr. Matti Wilks (Psychology), Dr. Barry Maguire (Philosophy) and Dr. Sue Widdicombe (Psychology).

I am also a director and researcher at the Software Stewardship Lab, an applied research non-profit dedicated to ensuring the stability of the Open Source software ecosystem. I research burnout in Open Source, investigating the structural issues that put developers at risk of burnout and what we can do to fix them, so that nobody has to sacrifice their mental health to contribute to our digital commons. You can read my report and listen to my FOSDEM talk on burnout in Open Source.

I like making and listening to music, painting, photography, learning about programming, being in nature (particularly the ocean) and connecting meaningfully with others. Oh, and spoonbills.

Want to talk? You can reach me at miranda@mirandaheath.website. You can read my cv here.
